Forming Tap - Overview
A form tap, also known as a cold forming tap or roll tap, is a tool used to create internal threads by plasticly deforming the workpiece material, rather than cutting it away. This chipless process displaces material to form stronger, smoother, and more robust threads, making it ideal for high-production environments, miniature applications, and ductile materials like certain steels and aluminum.

Forming taps, also known as roll taps, form taps, and fluteless taps, create thread forms by rolling material rather than cutting away any excess material. This means there is no need for flutes to evacuate chips. Thread forming taps generate threads that are significantly more robust than those produced by cutting taps. They offer a long lifespan due to their fluteless design, providing the necessary rigidity to avoid breakage. The lack of a cutting edge ensures that there is nothing to wear and become dull. Using a thread forming tap, also known as a roll tap, is an efficient and reliable method for thread forming in various applications.

Material of Threads With Taps
Internal threads can be produced by a cold forming or swaging process. The desired thread is formed in the metal under pressure and the grain fibers, as in good forging, follow the contour of the thread. These grain fibers are not cut away as in conventional tapping. The cold forming tap has neither flutes nor cutting edges and therefore, it produces no chips and cannot create a chip problem. The resulting thread has a burnished surface.
Material Recommended: Care must be taken to minimize surface damage to the hole when tapping materials which are prone to work harden. This may be accomplished by using sharp drills, correct speed and feeds. Surface damage may cause torque to increase to a point of stopping the machine or breaking the tap.
Cold forming taps have been recommended for threading ductile materials. Examples of material classes which have been tapped are:
