Spade Drill
Definition of Spade Drill
- Spade drill is a modular high performance replaceable insert drills launched by CHTOOLS.
- Spade drill can be used in traditional machine tools and CNC machine tools, directly insert replacement, no need regrinding, higher drilling speed and other characteristics can greatly improve the efficiency of drilling. Especially compared with twist drill, the efficiency has been greatly improved, and has become the best choice for traditional machine tools and CNC machine tools to improve the quality and efficiency of hole processing.
- Spade drill consists of tool holder and insert, and with a set of oil ring to realize the cooling system of the traditional machine tool from outer cooling to inner cooling. The tool holder made of high strength heat-resistant alloy steel after heat treatment and precision machining. The insert is made of powder metallurgy high speed steel and cemented carbide.
- Insert diameter range : 9.5 mm to 114 mm, can drilling respectively in steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, cast iron, steel, aluminum alloy materials etc.
Advantages of Spade Drill
interchangeable insert structure
The simple and convenient interchangeable insert structure can make inserts replacement on the machine tool directly;
01
holder with internal cooling
The spade drill is composed of a tool holder and insert. The center of the tool holder is designed with internal cooling. One kind of holder can be adapted to several inserts of different specifications to reduce the purchase cost of it. The inserts have two series of imported powder high-speed steel and imported carbide.
02
higher drilling speed
High wear resistant material, top-level coating and precision grinding technology, 50% ~ 200% more efficient than traditional twist drill.
03
Suitable for various models
Spade drill can be used in traditional machine tools, CNC machine tools and ELECTRIC HAND DRILL, BENCH DRILL, MAGNETIC DRILL MACHINE.
04
Shank Types of Spade Drill
There are two series of shank types: Morse taper shank and straight with one flat shank.
- A Morse taper shank is a conical fitting system based on the Morse Taper (MT) standard, used to secure cutting tools (e.g., drills, milling cutters, reamers) in machine tool spindles. It transmits torque through frictional contact between the taper surfaces and prevents tool rotation via a tang at the end.
- A tool with a straight shank and one flat is a practical solution for securing small-to-medium tools in machines where anti-rotation is critical but a tapered shank is unnecessary. Its simplicity and cost-effectiveness make it widely used in both professional machining and DIY settings, ensuring reliable performance for drilling, milling, or routing tasks.
Applications of Spade Drill

Metalworking
Drilling: Small to medium-sized holes in steel, aluminum, or cast iron.
Milling: End mills with straight shanks and flats are used in CNC machines for precise cuts.
For traditional machine tools, please choose powder high speed steel series.
For CNC machines, please select powder high speed steel series for medium and low.

FAQ
Q: 1.What is a spade drill used for?
+
-
A: Spade drill can be used in traditional machine tools, CNC machine tools.
Q: 2.What is the main use of spade bit?
+
-
A: Spade bits are flat, wide drill bits used primarily for drilling large. They feature a sharp central point for precise positioning and two cutting edges that rapidly remove the material as the bit spins.
Q: 3.What is an insert drill?
+
-
A: Insert drills have a hardened steel body with inserts at the end that do the cutting. There are two overlapping inserts, a central insert and a peripheral.
Q: 4.How long do spade bit last?
+
-
A: The twist drill can only finish one hole, but the spade drill can make 80 hole continuously.
